Formation builder

4-4-1-1 Formation Builder

Create a 4-4-1-1 lineup with a back four, a midfield four, a second striker, a centre-forward, and a goalkeeper.

When to use a 4-4-1-1 formation

The 4-4-1-1 is a variation of the 4-4-2 where one forward drops into the space between midfield and attack. It keeps the defensive solidity of two banks of four while adding a link player who can receive the ball between the lines and support the striker.

Tactical notes

Strengths, trade-offs, and key roles

Strengths

  • Two banks of four keep the team compact and well organised.
  • The second striker links play and can drop in to help the midfield.
  • Familiar shape that is easy for players to understand.

Trade-offs

  • The centre-forward can become isolated if the second striker drops too deep.
  • Two central midfielders can be outnumbered by a midfield three.

Best player roles

  • A clever second striker who finds pockets of space and creates chances.
  • A centre-forward who can hold the ball up and finish chances.
  • Wide midfielders who work hard defensively and deliver crosses.
