How to set up a 7v7 team

7v7 is the standard format for many under-9 to under-11 teams and a popular adult small-sided game. Six outfield players give enough numbers to create defensive, midfield, and attacking lines, so players start learning positions. The 2-3-1 is the most balanced shape and a great default for youth teams.

Coaching tips

  • Use the wide midfielders to stretch the pitch when your team has the ball.
  • Teach the defenders to split wide so the goalkeeper can play out from the back.
  • Ask the striker to press the opposition defenders and goalkeeper.
  • Swap formations at half-time to show players how shapes change the game.
