5-4-1 Formation Builder

Create a 5-4-1 lineup with a back five, a midfield four, one striker, and a goalkeeper.

When to use a 5-4-1 formation

The 5-4-1 is one of the most defensive shapes in football. Two banks of five and four leave very little space between the lines, which makes it popular for underdogs, teams protecting a lead, and sides that want to absorb pressure and break with pace.

Tactical notes

Strengths, trade-offs, and key roles

Strengths

  • Five defenders cover the full width of the pitch and the penalty area.
  • Two compact lines make it very hard for opponents to find space between them.
  • Wing-backs can turn the shape into a 3-4-3 when the team wins the ball.

Trade-offs

  • With only one forward, the team can struggle to keep possession high up the pitch.
  • It can invite long spells of pressure if the counter-attack does not work.

Best player roles

  • Wing-backs with the stamina to defend deep and support attacks.
  • Three centre-backs who are strong in the air and comfortable defending the box.
  • A striker who can win long balls and run the channels alone.
