5v5 Formation Builder

Plan your 5-a-side team with four outfield players and a goalkeeper. Compare the best 5v5 shapes and build a lineup to share with players and parents.

How to set up a 5v5 team

5v5 is the first match format for many young players, and also the classic small-sided game for adults. With only four outfield players, every player defends and attacks, so the best formations keep the team connected and give each player a clear role. The diamond is the most common choice, but a flat 2-2 is easier for beginners.

Coaching tips

  • Rotate positions every game so players learn to defend and attack.
  • Encourage the goalkeeper to play out with short passes instead of kicking long.
  • Keep the team close together so players always have a nearby passing option.
  • Give every player equal playing time; small-sided football is about touches on the ball.
